A dedicated circuit is a circuit breaker in your electrical panel that serves one outlet, one appliance, or one piece of equipment and nothing else. No other device shares that wire. When the appliance draws power, it gets the full amperage the circuit is rated for without competing with anything else on the line.

That distinction matters because most of the electrical problems homeowners call about (tripping breakers, flickering lights when an appliance kicks on, appliances that cycle slowly or underperform) trace back to circuits that are carrying more load than they were designed to handle. A dedicated circuit eliminates the problem at the source.

The National Electrical Code requires dedicated circuits for specific appliances. Beyond the code minimums, any piece of equipment that draws a significant portion of a circuit’s rated capacity should have its own circuit to prevent overloading and nuisance tripping.

Here is what the NEC requires and what practical experience in St. Louis area homes confirms should be on its own circuit.

Kitchen. The NEC requires a minimum of two 20A small-appliance branch circuits serving kitchen countertop receptacles. Beyond that, the following kitchen appliances each require their own dedicated circuit: the electric range or cooktop (40A or 50A, 240V), the dishwasher (15A or 20A, with GFCI protection required under the 2023 NEC), the garbage disposal (15A or 20A, GFCI protected), the refrigerator (20A), and any built-in microwave (20A). A kitchen remodel that doesn’t address circuit capacity is a kitchen that trips breakers the first time the dishwasher and disposal run simultaneously.

Laundry. The NEC requires at least one dedicated 20A circuit for laundry receptacles, serving only laundry equipment. An electric dryer requires a separate 30A, 240V circuit. A gas dryer still needs a dedicated 20A, 120V circuit for the motor, igniter, and controls.

Bathroom. The NEC requires a dedicated 20A circuit for bathroom receptacles. This circuit can serve receptacles in more than one bathroom but cannot serve lighting, exhaust fans, or receptacles in other room types.

HVAC. Central air conditioning compressors, heat pumps, electric furnaces, and electric water heaters all require individual dedicated circuits sized to the specific equipment. Circuit sizing for HVAC equipment is determined by the unit’s nameplate rating, not by a generic rule of thumb.

EV chargers. A Level 2 EV charger typically requires a 40A or 50A, 240V dedicated circuit. This is one of the most common dedicated circuit installations in the St. Louis area right now. The circuit must be sized so the continuous load (the charger’s rated draw over three or more hours) does not exceed 80% of the breaker’s rating per NEC 210.20. A 40A charger needs a 50A breaker and appropriately sized conductors.

Hot tubs and spas. Most hot tubs require a 50A or 60A, 240V dedicated circuit with GFCI protection. The NEC requires a disconnect switch within sight of the hot tub and at least five feet from the water’s edge.

Home offices. Not code-required, but a dedicated 20A circuit for a home office prevents the situation where a laser printer cycling on trips the breaker and kills the power to your computer, monitor, router, and every other device in the room. If you work from home full time, a dedicated circuit is cheap insurance against lost work.

Workshops and garages. Table saws, air compressors, welders, and other high-draw tools either need dedicated circuits or will trip shared circuits repeatedly. A 20A circuit handles most portable power tools. A welder or large air compressor may need a 30A or 50A, 240V circuit.

Sump pumps. A sump pump should always be on its own dedicated circuit. If it shares a circuit and the breaker trips from an unrelated overload, the pump stops running. In a St. Louis basement during spring rains, a dead sump pump means water damage.

Whether a dedicated circuit installation requires a permit in the St. Louis metro depends on the municipality. St. Louis City requires an electrical permit for most electrical work, including adding or modifying circuits. St. Louis County jurisdictions generally follow the same rule: any time you change a circuit, add a receptacle, or modify the electrical system, the work should be inspected. Some smaller municipalities have varying thresholds.

We verify the permit requirements for your specific municipality before the work begins and pull the permit when required. The cost of a residential electrical permit in the St. Louis area is typically $50 to $150 depending on the jurisdiction.

Regardless of whether a permit is technically required, every dedicated circuit we install meets the current NEC edition adopted by your jurisdiction. Under the 2023 NEC now in effect in St. Louis City and County, the key requirements that affect dedicated circuit installations include GFCI protection for all kitchen receptacles (not just countertop outlets near the sink), AFCI protection for kitchen, laundry, and living area circuits, and tamper-resistant receptacles in all dwelling unit locations.

How Dedicated Circuit 

Installation Works

The process is straightforward, but the details matter.

We start by verifying that your existing panel has capacity for the new circuit. This means both physical space (an available breaker slot) and electrical capacity (enough remaining amperage on the service to support the new load without exceeding the panel’s rating). If the panel is full or the service is undersized, we discuss options: consolidating existing circuits with tandem breakers where code allows, installing a subpanel, or upgrading the main panel or service.

Once capacity is confirmed, we run the appropriately sized wire from the panel to the outlet or equipment location. Wire gauge is determined by the circuit’s amperage rating and the length of the run: a 20A circuit uses 12-gauge wire, a 30A circuit uses 10-gauge, a 40A circuit uses 8-gauge, and a 50A circuit uses 6-gauge. Longer runs may require upsizing to compensate for voltage drop, especially on 240V circuits going to a detached garage or an outbuilding.

We install the correct breaker type in the panel. Under the 2023 NEC (adopted by St. Louis City and St. Louis County in January 2025), most new circuits in dwelling units require both GFCI and AFCI protection depending on the circuit location and what it serves. Kitchen receptacle circuits, laundry circuits, bathroom circuits, and many living-area circuits now require dual-function (AFCI/GFCI) breakers or equivalent protection. We install the correct protection for each circuit based on the current code requirements in your specific municipality.

We install the receptacle or make the hardwire connection at the equipment end. For 240V installations (EV chargers, dryers, ranges, hot tubs), this means installing the correct NEMA outlet type for the equipment. For hardwired appliances (dishwashers, disposals, some HVAC equipment), we make the connection directly.

The entire installation is tested before we leave: breaker operation, voltage at the outlet, ground fault and arc fault protection function, and a load test with the appliance connected.

Panel Capacity: What Happens When the Panel Is Full

Older St. Louis homes frequently have panels with no available breaker slots. A home built in the 1960s or 1970s with the original 100A panel may have every slot filled and still not have dedicated circuits for half the appliances that code now requires. This is the most common complication in dedicated circuit work.

There are three solutions, and which one fits depends on the situation.

Tandem breakers. Some panels accept tandem (twin or slim-line) breakers that fit two circuits into one slot. Not all panels accept them, and the NEC limits how many tandem breakers a panel can hold. The panel’s labeling diagram specifies which slots accept tandems. If the panel is already at its tandem limit, this option is off the table.

Subpanel. A subpanel is a secondary panel fed from the main panel. It gives you additional breaker slots without replacing the main panel. This is a good option when the main panel’s amperage is adequate but the physical space is full. We install subpanels in basements, garages, and utility areas. A 60A or 100A subpanel with 12 to 20 spaces handles most residential expansion needs.

Panel upgrade. If the panel is both physically full and electrically undersized (a 100A panel on a home that needs 200A service), the right move is a full panel upgrade. This is a larger project, but it solves the capacity problem permanently and brings the home’s electrical infrastructure up to current code. How do I know if I need a dedicated circuit?

If a breaker trips regularly when a specific appliance runs, if the lights dim when an appliance kicks on, or if an appliance underperforms (a window AC that can’t cool the room, a microwave that heats slowly), the appliance is likely sharing a circuit that can’t handle the combined load. A dedicated circuit gives that appliance its own breaker and its own wire back to the panel. Beyond symptoms, the NEC requires dedicated circuits for ranges, dishwashers, disposals, refrigerators, laundry equipment, bathroom receptacles, and HVAC equipment. If any of those appliances in your home aren’t on dedicated circuits, they should be.

How long does it take to install a dedicated circuit?

A single dedicated circuit installation typically takes two to four hours. Multiple circuits in the same visit are more efficient per circuit. A straightforward 20A circuit in a home with an accessible panel and an unfinished basement or crawlspace for wire routing is on the shorter end. A 50A, 240V circuit running through finished walls to a detached garage takes longer.

Can I add a dedicated circuit to my panel myself?

In St. Louis City, homeowners can obtain a permit and perform their own electrical work on an owner-occupied single-family dwelling after passing a short code knowledge test administered by the Building Division. However, service changes and new construction require a licensed contractor. In practice, working inside an energized panel carries real risk of electrocution and arc flash. The panel’s bus bars are live even when individual breakers are off. We do not recommend homeowner panel work for safety reasons.

What if my panel doesn't have room for a new breaker?
